Inside the WPÜ Hotel in Shinjuku, in the middle of Tokyo, there is a studio that goes on air every day of the week, from four in the afternoon until ten at night. Room 303 has broadcast from that hotel since 2024. As community radio goes, it is young. What sets it apart is the address: a community station that runs live from inside a working boutique hotel.
A radio station inside a hotel
Most community stations fight for a room of their own. Room 303 found one inside the WPÜ Hotel and made the hotel part of the broadcast. Seven days a week, between four and ten in the evening, local DJs take the booth and play across house, techno, footwork, jungle and R&B, as well as listening sets and even talk shows, with little interest in staying inside any one lane. The station is online, the schedule is daily, and the sound is whatever Tokyo's selectors bring through the door. For a station only two years old, that is a lot of airtime to fill, and Room 303 fills it.
The residents who carry the signal
Room 303 is built on its residents, not on a parade of flown-in names. The station announced forty new residents for 2026, among them Seimei, Kotono Shirai, HALU and Submerse, the UK-born, Tokyo-based producer. Forty is a real bench for a young station, and it is the honest measure of what Room 303 is: a place where Tokyo's own DJs get a regular slot and a live audience, week after week. The roster is the show.
What Tokyo gets from it
The launch told you what kind of station this would be. Room 303 opened at the WPÜ in August 2024 alongside the Ishikawa festival ishinoko's pre-party for their 2024 edition, and the day filled with live music, talks, art, workshops, food, film and broadcasting. Mixmag Asia called the station "a true driver of community," and the daily schedule backs it up. Every afternoon Room 303 hands the city's selectors a booth, a signal and a room of people who came to listen.
Part of the coalition
That instinct, local first and scene first, is what makes Room 303 a natural part of Airtime Asia: the independent, decentralized coalition of underground radio stations from across the continent. From the 13th to the 16th of August 2026, those stations gather across Da Nang and Hoi An in Vietnam, Room 303 among them, with station co-founder Miles aka DJ Lawson, and monthly radio resident host and DJ Sara Hirayama, carrying the Tokyo signal into the lineup.
