In Wan Chai, on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong Community Radio has been broadcasting since 2016, with new shows daily, carrying underground electronic music from the city, from across Asia, and from well beyond it. The station built that signal as a safe space for newcomers, outsiders, and the marginalized to find a voice of their own. That stance is not a tagline; it runs through the whole schedule.
Built in Wan Chai by two label figures
The station was founded by Gavin Wong of the Hong Kong label Absurd Trax and Davy Law of Neoncity Records. Mixmag Asia counts it among the most established stations in Asia and calls it a melting point, somewhere every scene, sound and styling can find a home and experiment. That reads as close to literal: the programming runs expansive and experimental, and the people behind it treat that range as the format itself. Close to ten years on, new shows are still landing, with episodes dated through 2026.
Who has broadcast on the station
The reach runs well past Hong Kong. Ruhail Qaisar hosts a recurring series on the station called Hounds of Pamir. Hiro Kone, the New York experimental artist and Drew McDowall collaborator, has appeared among its guest-show artists, alongside FRKTL, the British-Egyptian artist Sarah Badr, who works out of Latvia. The Taiwanese performer R000000M has played live on air, and closer to home, Mint Park has guested and yiiee turns in regular DJ sets. For a livestream run out of Wan Chai, that is a deep roster to have gathered, and it turns over on top of a daily rotation of Hong Kong residents.
What Hong Kong gets from it
The deeper work is local and regional. Hong Kong Community Radio hands independent and marginalized creators the kind of platform commercial radio rarely offers, and it sets out to be a central point for artists across the regional network, opening cross-border exchange with no regard for timezone or borders. Every day, the schedule makes space for Hong Kong and Asian artists to reach anyone the stream can find.
Part of the coalition
That instinct, independent artists first, is what makes Hong Kong Community Radio a natural part of Airtime Asia: the independent, decentralized coalition of underground radio stations from across the continent. From the 13th to the 16th of August 2026, those stations gather across Da Nang and Hoi An in Vietnam, HKCR among them, with Yung Waste, Nerve, and Ocean Lam carrying the Hong Kong signal into the lineup.
