Grassroots Rising: Community Radio's Power in APAC is a two-part conversation exploring how community radio is shaping music, cultural identity and underground infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific. The broadcast arrives in the lead-up to Airtime Asia, an independent decentralised festival and music conference taking place from 13–16 August 2026 across Đà Nẵng and Hội An, Vietnam, bringing together underground radio platforms and music communities from across Asia.

Part One explores what community radio means across the Asia-Pacific as culture, connection and grassroots infrastructure, not just broadcasting.

Adapted from the original session presented at the Nighttime Foundation's Nighttime Lab at ADE in 2025, the series brings together broadcasters, DJs, organisers and cultural leaders from Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo and Naarm/Melbourne to explore why community radio remains essential to grassroots music communities. Through shared stories, local perspectives and regional connections, the conversation highlights how these platforms foster cultural exchange, support emerging artists and strengthen underground scenes across the Asia-Pacific.

Together, these conversations reveal how community radio has become the connective tissue linking underground scenes across the vast distances of the Asia-Pacific, creating new pathways for collaboration and cultural dialogue that traditional media cannot reach. Rather than looking back on radio's golden age, the series examines how community frequencies continue to shape the future of cultural movements across APAC in real time.

Hosted by Shivani Sharma, EMC's Community Engagement Manager, and Arun Ramanthan, Director of Mixmag Asia.

Each guest shares a historical, scene-defining track: DJ PGZ (Paul Gorrie) reflects on Yothu Yindi's "Treaty" and its connection to Australia's ongoing treaty conversations; Takky (Bangkok Community Radio) shares Kristina Aguilar's "Prawasad" as a marker of 90s Thai pop, female empowerment and social change; Rich Price (Seoul Community Radio) discusses Korea's footwork-driven underground through Kong Vu's "Taepyeongso-Taek"; while Akiko Usuki (Teal Inc, Tokyo) and MiMi Shimada (Tokyo) trace Japan's dance music lineage through Yellow Magic Orchestra and Boom Boom Satellites.

The conversation also turns to the founding stories of Seoul Community Radio, Bangkok Community Radio and Melbourne's 3RRR, touching on pirate radio roots, volunteer-run models, post-COVID rebuilding and radio's role as a lifeline for underground talent overlooked by the mainstream.

Grassroots Rising là chuỗi trò chuyện gồm hai phần, khám phá cách các đài phát thanh cộng đồng (community radio) đang trở thành "trái tim" của những cộng đồng âm nhạc độc lập trên khắp Châu Á – Thái Bình Dương.

Không chỉ đơn thuần là nơi phát nhạc, community radio là không gian để nghệ sĩ, DJ, selector và những người yêu âm nhạc gặp gỡ, chia sẻ và cùng xây dựng một nền văn hóa âm nhạc đa dạng, không bị chi phối bởi thuật toán hay xu hướng thương mại.

Chương trình được thực hiện nhân dịp Airtime Asia – lễ hội văn hóa, âm nhạc và hội nghị các đài phát thanh độc lập đầu tiên tại châu Á, diễn ra từ 13–16/08/2026 tại Đà Nẵng và Hội An, quy tụ các radio stations, cộng đồng âm nhạc và những người làm văn hóa từ 12 quốc gia.

Phần 1

Buổi trò chuyện mở đầu sẽ cùng nhìn lại vai trò của community radio tại khu vực Châu Á – Thái Bình Dương: không chỉ là một kênh phát sóng, mà còn là chất keo kết nối cộng đồng, nơi những tài năng mới được cất lên tiếng nói, những dòng nhạc mới được khám phá và những scene underground được nuôi dưỡng từ chính cộng đồng địa phương.

Được phát triển từ phiên thảo luận tại Nighttime Lab của Nighttime Foundation trong khuôn khổ Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) 2025, chương trình quy tụ các broadcaster, DJ, nhà tổ chức và những người đang trực tiếp xây dựng các scene âm nhạc tại Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo và Naarm/Melbourne.

Các đài phát thanh cộng đồng đã trở thành sợi dây kết nối các scene underground trên khắp khu vực Châu Á – Thái Bình Dương.

Thông qua những câu chuyện thực tế, góc nhìn địa phương và các kết nối xuyên biên giới, buổi trò chuyện sẽ mở ra một bức tranh về cách các nền tảng radio cộng đồng đang góp phần đưa âm nhạc vượt khỏi biên giới, hỗ trợ thế hệ nghệ sĩ mới và giữ cho những cộng đồng underground luôn sống động.
